General Information about  U.S. patents

Domestic U.S. patents are effective in the United States and its territorial possessions. They must be applied for within one year of any publication, public use or offer of sale. However, to preserve foreign rights, apply through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office before any publication, public use or sale.

Machines, methods, compositions of matter, microorganisms, DNA, computer programs, in fact, anything "made by the hand of man"  is patentable subject matter.

To file for a U.S. patent a complete description of the invention is required, along with drawings if necessary for understanding of the invention, at least one claim, and a filing fee, along with a declaration attesting to inventorship by the inventor(s).
